Gaye Lockwood

The prints in this exhibition are a selection from Gaye Lockwood’s South Western Journey.  Her early interest in the South West came through the imagery visualised from the lyrics and music of the American songwriters she listened to and talked with.

A love of the back roads, dirt tracks and arroyos together with nostalgia for another era, of old adobe walls, of horses running free, of faded, rusted, weathered icons and colours of the desert.  All of this, combined with the objets trouvés of her travels and collections from nature, has inspired this series.

Working with a photographer and printmaker, these piezo pigmented prints have been produced from artworks in relief.  The limited editions are printed on a 308 gsm Hahnemühle 100% cotton paper with archival quality links.

The journey continues with Gaye Lockwood’s most recent original works in mixed media in relief.  Inspired by her own personal collection of artefacts, they reveal her strong sense of colour, texture and composition.

Gaye Lockwood was born in Lincolnshire, England and studied at Leicester and Cambridge School of Art in the early seventies.  Her work has ranged from graphic design and hand lettering through to mixed media illustration.  Soon after leaving college she became part of a small group of the first women pub sign painters in Great Britain.  A long-term commitment to the Cambridge Folk Festival has also been an important part of her professional life.
